Tips, Topics, Strategies ... & Everything else we're using to create lasting changes
Sitting for long periods is just as harmful to your health as smoking cigarettes. In fact, sitting has been dubbed the new smoking. Our sedentary lifestyles are taking a toll on our physical health, causing poor posture back and neck pain, shoulder pain, and weight gain. But it's not just our physical health that's suffering – sitting is creating just as many health issues for people these days as smoking cigarettes.
So what are the health risks of sitting? And why is it being called the new smoking? Let's take a closer look.
Sitting for long periods puts extra stress on your spinal column and discs, which can lead to back pain. If you already have back pain, sitting will only make it worse. And if you don't have back pain, sitting for long periods of time can cause it. So if you want to avoid back pain, or if you already have back pain and want to improve it, you need to move around more and sit less.
One of the risk factors of sitting is neck and shoulder pain. When you sit, you're often hunched over, which can cause tension in your neck muscles and shoulders. This tension can lead to pain. If you have neck or shoulder pain, it's important to see a doctor. But you can also try some simple exercises to help relieve the pain.
Weight gain is another health risk of sitting. When you sit, you're not burning many calories, which can lead to weight gain. If you're trying to lose weight, you need to be more active. And if you're trying to maintain your weight, you need to be more active as well. So get up and move around! Try to take a few minutes every hour to walk around, or even better, go for a short walk outside to get some fresh air.
Studies have shown that being in the sitting position for long periods of time can lead to mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. This is because when you sit, your body produces less of the hormones that make you feel happy and relaxed. And when you're stressed or feeling down, it's harder to focus and be productive. So if you're struggling with anxiety or depression, try to get up and move around more. Exercise can help improve your mood and make you feel happier and more relaxed.
It's important to get help from a doctor if you're struggling with mental health issues. However, you can also try to get more exercise, which has been shown to help improve mental health and relieve stress. So get up and move around! Go for a walk, go to the gym, or even just dance around your living room.
The health risks of sitting have been compared to smoking, and rightfully so. To stay healthy, it is important to get up and move around often. As simple as it may seem, this small task helps relieve pain, increase your current mental and emotional state, and improve your overall health. Also, make sure to sit up straight and take breaks when sitting helps reduce the health risks associated with being sedentary. And if you're struggling with mental health issues, seek help from a doctor. But you can also try to get more exercise, which has been shown to help improve mental health. So get up and move around! Go for a walk, go to the gym, dance around your living room – just get up and move!
